Apply to be a part of our 2021 summer program!
The Full Story
We are very excited to be launching the first national VI4 (Vanderbilt Institute for Infection, Immunology, and Inflammation) Artist-in-Residence Program this summer! This program is an opportunity for student artists and scientists to explore together innovative means of science communication. This residency consists of an artistic collaboration within a research environment from top tier laboratories across the country, that is occurring entirely remotely. Artists will be immersed in the lab and create artwork related to the laboratories’ research. The hope is that this art will be included in scientific manuscripts, submitted as cover art to various scientific journals, and/or used to promote the laboratory on web sites, social media, and other public-facing platforms. In addition to the laboratories promoting the artists’ work, these collaborations may also be featured at VI4 events and other exhibitions sponsored by ArtLab and/or other Vanderbilt programs and exhibits. Examples of work from past Artist-in-Residences can be found on this website
Artists and labs will meet weekly (or more frequently, as needed) to plan and check in on progress. This can be either by phone or a web-based video platform. The students artists will also have a weekly program meeting. Final pieces must be completed in by the end of the 10-week program, which will run from June through August 2021. A supply budget will be provided to each artist, as well as a $500 stipend. This program can be done concurrently with other summer research opportunities and programs.
